Why I recommend it

I recommend this because it offers a more human account of motivation than reward and punishment. Autonomy, mastery, and purpose are useful lenses for understanding why good people engage deeply with some work and withdraw from other work.

What it changed in my thinking

It reinforced that motivation is shaped by the environment. Leaders cannot demand ownership while controlling every decision, or ask for mastery without making room to learn.

Who it’s useful for

Managers, coaches, educators, and anyone designing work that depends on judgment, creativity, and sustained commitment.

A tension or limitation

Intrinsic motivation does not erase material needs or unequal power. Meaningful work still requires fair pay, security, and conditions people can trust.
