Getting to Yes

Why I recommend it

I recommend this classic because it shifts negotiation away from fixed positions and toward interests, options, and fair standards. That move creates more room for both clarity and invention.

What it changed in my thinking

It taught me to listen for what a stated demand is trying to protect. Two positions may conflict even when the underlying interests leave space for a workable agreement.

Who it’s useful for

Leaders, managers, partners, and anyone navigating a negotiation they hope will preserve the relationship as well as reach a decision.

A tension or limitation

Principled negotiation is harder when power is sharply unequal or the other party is acting in bad faith. Collaboration still needs boundaries and a credible alternative to agreement.
