I recommend this intimate novel about two brothers grieving differently and misunderstanding each other with great intelligence. Rooney is especially good at the distance between what people feel, think, and manage to say.

Closeness does not guarantee understanding. The novel made me think about how grief rearranges time and how quickly private shame becomes a story about another person’s motives.
