Making Work Visible

Why I recommend it

This book makes invisible overload difficult to ignore. It offers a practical way to see queues, interruptions, and competing commitments that quietly consume a team’s capacity.

What it changed in my thinking

It strengthened my view that focus is a system condition, not a character trait. When too much work is in motion, asking people to manage their time better misses the actual problem.

Who it’s useful for

Product and engineering teams, managers balancing too many priorities, and anyone whose work is repeatedly displaced by unplanned requests.

A tension or limitation

Visibility does not create permission to stop work. Leaders still have to make tradeoffs, reduce demand, and protect the capacity the board reveals.
