I recommend this for its attention to a people, a landscape, and the devastating effects of outside economic and political systems. Mowat writes with urgency about lives too easily ignored.

What stayed with me

The book made the distance between policy and lived consequence feel smaller. Systems described as progress can look very different from the place where their costs arrive.

Readers interested in the Canadian Arctic, Indigenous history, ecology, and the consequences of colonial intervention.

A tension or limitation

Mowat was an outsider, and aspects of his reporting have been disputed. The book should be read alongside Inuit voices and contemporary scholarship, not as the final authority.
