Several Short Sentences About Writing

Why I recommend it

I recommend this unusual craft book for returning attention to the sentence as the place where a writer thinks, notices, and chooses. Klinkenborg challenges habits learned from formulaic outlines and invites writers to hear each sentence before asking it to serve a larger structure.

What it changed in my thinking

A sentence does not need to know the entire destination of the piece. It needs to be alive, exact, and able to create a useful next possibility.

Who it’s useful for

Writers revising flat prose, teachers looking for a different approach to craft, and anyone whose awareness of the finished piece makes starting feel impossible.

A tension

The fragmented form enacts the method but can feel oracular or repetitive. Sentence-level attention still has to meet structure, argument, pacing, and the reader’s need for orientation.
