Why I recommend it

I recommend this approachable dialogue about Adlerian psychology for its challenge to stop organizing a life around approval, comparison, and other people’s expectations. The exchange between a philosopher and a skeptical young man makes provocative ideas about freedom, responsibility, and relationships easy to engage with.

What stayed with me

The separation of tasks is a powerful relational question: what is actually mine to do, and what belongs to someone else? Accepting that distinction can make room for both greater agency and less control over how others respond.

Who it’s useful for

People working through approval-seeking, comparison, or interpersonal conflict, as well as coaches interested in an accessible introduction to Adlerian ideas.

A tension or limitation

The book’s strong claims about trauma and personal choice can understate the lasting effects of harm, social conditions, and mental illness. Its ideas require more care and nuance than the argumentative dialogue always provides.
