Why I recommend it
This is foundational because it teaches us to look at the design before blaming the person. Norman makes everyday confusion legible through feedback, constraints, mapping, and affordances.
What it changed in my thinking
It helped cement a principle I carry into product and leadership work: repeated human error is often evidence about the system. Better design makes the intended action easier to understand.
Who it’s useful for
Designers, product managers, engineers, and anyone creating tools, processes, or environments other people must navigate.
A tension or limitation
The principles are durable, but some examples show their age. Applying them to complex digital products still requires research, context, and judgment.
