My yoga teacher will often say "relax something" when we're in the midst of some insanely hard pose. It's a simple thing, but it always works. I realize that I can relax my jaw, my tongue, my shoulders, my toes, or something. By relaxing something, my mind and body are focused on the relaxing and not the tension that exists someplace else.
I've since adopted this technique when I'm in a challenging situation. Whether it's the dentist or a stressful meeting, relaxing something is a super simple and effective meditative technique.
And, yes, I just realized that my recent posts have been about breathing and meditation. Perhaps this is my subtle and unconscious response to the stress happening in our country. Dunno.
