I recommend this for McPhee’s patient, exact account of how nonfiction is shaped. He makes structure, selection, reporting, and revision feel like parts of one attentive craft.

What it changed in my thinking

It reinforced that a first draft is material, not a verdict. Clarity often appears through rearranging and cutting after the writer has discovered what the piece is actually about.
