Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters
Why I recommend it
This is one of the clearest books on what strategy actually is. Rumelt strips away slogans and ambition statements, returning strategy to diagnosis, a guiding approach, and coherent action.
What it changed in my thinking
It made me more alert to plans that avoid naming the challenge. If a strategy does not force choices or direct energy toward an obstacle, it is probably a list of hopes.
Who it’s useful for
Founders, executives, product leaders, and teams trying to turn a broad vision into consequential choices.
A tension or limitation
A strong diagnosis can still be wrong. Clarity should make a strategy testable, not make leaders overconfident in the story they have chosen.
