This is a generous family novel about love, injury, loyalty, and the identities people build around one another. Napolitano gives each character enough interior life to complicate easy judgment.
What stayed with me
Families can make belonging feel both sustaining and conditional. The book deepened my interest in how people inherit roles, and what happens when a life can no longer fit inside one.
Who it’s useful for
Readers who enjoy character-driven family stories about rupture, mental health, forgiveness, and the long work of repair.
A tension or limitation
The novel asks for patience with choices that cause real harm. Compassion for a character does not require overlooking the consequences for everyone around them.
