Why I recommend it

I recommend this essay because hooks refuses to treat the margin only as a place of deprivation. She distinguishes marginality imposed by oppressive structures from the margin consciously inhabited as a space for critique, creativity, solidarity, and resistance.

A tension or limitation

The essay is deliberately compressed and invitational. Its account of choosing the margin should not be detached from hooks’s equally clear recognition that marginalization is often violently imposed rather than freely chosen.
