My Year of Rest and Relaxation
Why I recommend it
I recommend this dark, strange novel about a young woman’s attempt to sleep through her life. Its drug-induced hibernation and associated escapades made it the perfect book for escaping a long travel day, even as the story remains sharply interested in grief, privilege, alienation, and self-erasure.
What stayed with me
The narrator tries to make withdrawal into a form of transformation. The book’s uneasy question is whether a person can disappear from life long enough to return to it changed.
Who it’s useful for
Readers who enjoy caustic narrators, dark humor, unconventional plots, and fiction that refuses to make its central character conventionally likable.
A tension or limitation
The repetition and passivity are intentional, but they can make the novel feel claustrophobic. Its treatment of medication, friendship, and suffering is also deliberately cold rather than reassuring.
