Why I recommend it

I recommend this classic for its insistence that strong nonfiction comes from clarity, simplicity, revision, and a recognizable human voice. Zinsser moves from sentence-level clutter to the demands of forms such as memoir, travel, science, business, and criticism.

What it changed in my thinking

Clear writing is not decoration added to clear thought. Rewriting is often the process through which the writer discovers what they mean and removes what prevents the reader from seeing it.

A tension

Some examples and pronouncements reflect the era and tastes in which they were written. The principles are durable, but they should support a writer’s voice rather than flatten every voice into Zinsser’s.
