Positioning

Al Ries, Jack Trout

#Business Companies & Strategy

Why I recommend it

I recommend this classic because it treats positioning as a problem of attention and meaning, not a clever tagline. A product has to occupy a clear place in a customer’s mind relative to alternatives.

What it changed in my thinking

It reinforced that clarity requires exclusion. Trying to be everything to everyone usually leaves a product without a memorable reason to choose it.

Who it’s useful for

Founders, product leaders, and marketers struggling to explain who a product is for and why it matters.

A tension or limitation

Positioning can sharpen perception, but it cannot compensate for a weak product or misunderstood customer. The promise still has to survive contact with the experience.
