Why I recommend it

I recommend this book because Lorde writes about breast cancer and mastectomy without surrendering the experience to euphemism or private shame. Journal, memoir, and argument combine to make illness both personal and political.

What stayed with me

Silence does not protect us from fear or loss. Lorde insists on naming pain and bodily change while resisting the social pressures that tell women how recovery and femininity should look.

Who it’s useful for

Readers confronting illness, grief, embodiment, medical culture, self-definition, feminism, and the relationship between private experience and public language.

A tension or limitation

This is one person’s forcefully argued experience rather than a universal guide to cancer or recovery. Its challenge to prosthesis and conventional reassurance may not reflect what every survivor needs or chooses.
