Why I recommend it

This is such an immersive story. The dark academia atmosphere draws you in, but the psychological depth is what makes it unforgettable. Tartt brings us into a close group of students whose private world turns lethal. Knowing about the murder early makes the question of how they got there even more unsettling.

What stayed with me

Wanting to belong can change what we’re willing to accept. Secrecy and privilege make it easier for the characters to justify harm.

I’d love to see it made into a movie. There have been several high-profile attempts that fell through, which is frustrating when the world of the book feels so vivid.

Who it’s useful for

Readers who like atmospheric suspense and complicated, often unlikable characters.

A tension or limitation

The world is seductive, and the characters are self-absorbed. Spending so much time with them won’t suit everyone.
