Why I recommend it
This book offers a provocative way to understand why smart, committed people can stay stuck: our actions follow from how a situation occurs to us. That idea is especially useful in leadership, where changing the conversation can open possibilities that another plan or incentive cannot.
What it changed in my thinking
It pushed me to listen for the stories underneath a team’s behavior—the inherited conclusions about what is possible, who has power, and how things work here. In coaching, those stories are often a more productive place to begin than the visible problem.
Who it’s useful for
Leaders guiding organizational change, coaches helping clients interrupt entrenched patterns, and teams that have tried new processes without changing their results.
A tension or limitation
Its language can feel grand, and the emphasis on reframing risks underplaying structural constraints. A new future needs a new conversation, but it may also need different incentives, resources, and decisions.
