Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within
Why I recommend it
Goldberg treats writing as a practice we can return to. Her short chapters encourage attention and experimentation, with room to write before deciding whether any of it is good.
What stayed with me
We can start with something ordinary: a place, a detail, a thought we haven’t quite worked out. Getting words down gives us something to discover and eventually something to revise.
Who it’s useful for
New writers, people returning to writing, and anyone whose inner critic keeps interrupting the first draft.
A tension or limitation
Freeing up the writing is one part of the work. Shaping it for a reader still takes revision, structure, and choices about what to leave out.
